The Gulf is investing in solar, hydrogen and lower-carbon fuels at a pace few outside the region appreciate. For a product trader, that is not a threat to be waited out; it is a change in the product slate to be traded. Here is how we see it.
Fuel oil is shrinking, gasoil and LPG are not
Marine fuel rules (IMO 2020 and its successors) have pushed the market from high-sulphur fuel oil to VLSFO and gasoil, while power generation across Africa and South Asia still leans on diesel and, increasingly, LPG for cooking and industry. Demand for the middle of the barrel is durable for the next decade at least.
Solar is becoming a trade flow
Gulf-based manufacturers and distributors of PV modules, inverters and batteries are now shipping into the same African and South Asian markets that buy Gulf diesel — often to the same customers, who are building hybrid diesel-solar systems for mines, factories and telecom towers. A trader with those customer relationships is well placed to supply both.
Lower-carbon blending components
Biodiesel (FAME), HVO and lower-sulphur cutter stocks are appearing in Gulf blending pools. Storage hubs such as Hamriyah and Fujairah are adapting tankage to handle them. Traders that understand blending economics will find margin in producing the grades that customers' decarbonisation targets require.
Carbon data becomes part of the cargo
Buyers and regulators increasingly ask for emissions data on the cargoes they receive. Traders that can provide it — supplier certificates, vessel emissions, blending records — will stay on approved-supplier lists. Those that cannot will find doors closing.
The transition does not end the trader's role. It widens the product list and raises the bar on data.
